திருப்பதி அருகிலுள்ள காளஹஸ்தியில், காளத்திநாதர் கோவில் பிரபலமானது. பஞ்சபூத தலங்களில், வாயுவுக்குரிய தலம் இது. இங்கே, சிவராத்திரி உற்சவம் பிரமாண்டமாக நடக்கும். பூச்சிகளும், விலங்குகளும் கூட, இறைவன் மீது அன்பு வைத்து, அவரை அடைந்துள்ளபோது, ஆறறிவு படைத்த மனிதன், அவரைப் பற்றிச் சிந்திக்காமல் கூட இருக்கிறானே என்பதை, இத்தல வரலாறு எடுத்துச் சொல்கிறது. சிலந்தி ஒன்று, சிவனை வழிபட நினைத்தது. தன்னிடம் சுரக்கும் நூல் போன்ற திரவத்தால், மதில், கோபுரம், மண்டபம், மாளிகை, கருவறை, கலசம் என, கோவில் அமைத்தது. யாராவது அதை அறுத்து விட்டால், விடாமல் புதுப்பித்தது.
சிலந்தியின் அன்பை சோதிக்க விரும்பிய சிவன், தன் சன்னிதியில் இருந்த விளக்கை, சுடர்விட்டு எரியும்படி செய்தார். ஒரு நொடியில் சிலந்தி அமைத்த கோவில் எரிந்தது. மனம் வருந்திய சிலந்தி, உயிர்விடத் துணிந்து, விளக்கில் விழ முயன்ற போது, தடுத்தார் சிவன். சிலந்திக்கு காட்சி தந்து, "வேண்டும் வரம் கேள்!' என்றார்.
உலகப்பொருட்கள் மீது ஆசையில்லாத சிலந்தி, "பெருமானே... உன் திருவடியின் கீழ் அமரும் பாக்கியத்தை தர வேண்டும்...' என்றது. சிவனும் அவ்வாறே அருள்புரிந்தார். காளன் என்னும் பாம்பு, அரிய வகை ரத்தினக்கற்களை சிவனின் திருமுடியில் வைத்து பூஜித்து வந்தது. அத்தி எனும் யானை, அந்த ரத்தினங்களை தள்ளிவிட்டு, ஆற்றிலிருந்து நீர் எடுத்துவந்து, சிவனுக்கு அபிஷேகம் செய்து, வில்வ இலைகளை வைத்துச் சென்றது. மறுநாள் வந்த பாம்பு, "ரத்தினக் கற்களை சிதறடித்து, ஏதோ இலையை குப்பை போல் போட்டிருக்கின்றனரே...' என்று புலம்பியவாறே, அதைச் சுத்தப்படுத்தி, மீண்டும் ரத்தினக் கற்களை இறைவன் திருமுடியில் சூட்டி, பூஜித்து சென்றது.
யானை வழக்கம் போல் வந்து மணிகளைத் தட்டிவிட்டு, வில்வத்தைச் சூட்டிச் சென்றது. பல நாட்கள் இதே நிலை தொடர்ந்தது. ஒருநாள், யார் இப்படி செய்கின்றனர் என அறிய, சன்னிதிக்குள் மறைந்திருந்தது பாம்பு. அப்போது யானை, அங்கு வந்து மணிகளைத் தட்டி விடவே, ஒளிந்திருந்த பாம்பு சீறியெழுந்து, யானையின் துதிக்கையில் உள்ள துளைக்குள் புகுந்து, மத்தகத்தை அடைந்து குடையத் தொடங்கியது.
யானை அதைத் தாங்க முடியாமல், நிலத்தில் தும்பிக்கையை அடித்தும், ரத்தம் வரும் அளவு மத்தகத்தை தரையில் தேய்த்தும் பார்த்தது; குடைச்சல் தீரவில்லை. இதனால், "உடலில் புகுந்த பாம்பைக் கொன்று, நாமும் இறப்போம்...' என்று கருதி, கோபத்துடன் அங்குள்ள மலைமேல் மோதியது.
இந்த முழக்கத்தைக் கேட்ட தேவர்கள் நடுங்கினர். குகைகளில் தங்கியிருந்த முனிவர்கள் பயந்தனர். யானை தலை பிளந்து மயங்கி விழுந்தது. பாம்பு வெளியே வர முடியாமல் தவித்தது. அப்போது சிவபெருமான் உமையம்மையோடு காளை வாகனத்தில் தோன்றி, யானையை எழுப்பினார். உள்ளிருந்த பாம்பு வெளியே வந்தது. இரண்டிற்கும் தரிசனம் தந்த சிவன், அவற்றிற்கு முக்தியளித்தார்.
"சீ' என்றால் சிலந்தி. காளம் என்றால் பாம்பு. ஹஸ்தி (அத்தி) என்றால் யானை. சிலந்தி, பாம்பு, யானை ஆகியவை இத்தலத்து இறைவனை வழிபட்டு முக்தி அடைந்ததால் இத்தலத்தை, "சீகாளத்தி' என்றும், காளஹஸ்தி என்றும் அழைத்தனர். விலங்குகள் கூட கடவுளை அடைய, தங்கள் பக்தியை அதிதீவிரமாக செலுத்தின. ஆனால், ஆறறிவுள்ள மனிதன், கடவுளை வணங்குவதற்கே தயக்கம் காட்டுகிறான். மனிதப்பிறவி எடுத்ததன் பலனே, கடவுளை வணங்கி, பிறவித்தளையில் இருந்து விடுபடுவதற்கு தான் என்பதை காளஹஸ்தியின் வரலாறு நமக்கு உணர்த்துகிறது. இங்கு சென்று காளஹஸ்தீஸ்வரரையும், அம்பாள் ஞானப் பூங்கோதையையும் வணங்குங்கள். பிறவா நிலை வேண்டுங்கள்.
